Breaking Barriers: Why Girls in ICT Day Matters

You’ve heard about Girls in STEM, but what about Girls in ICT?  While the spotlight often shines on encouraging young women to pursue careers in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics, the realm of Information and Communication Technologies still remains in the shadows. In this article, we’ll talk about the importance of establishing a day that embodies the collective commitment to realize a vision of improvement.

The Gender Divide in ICT

As I peer into the realm of Information and Communication Technology, I’m confronted with a harsh reality: the disproportionate representation of women. It’s a landscape where opportunities seem to evade us, and the numbers paint a sobering picture. SOURCE: UN WOMEN Beyond the moral imperative lies a pragmatic truth: empowering girls in ICT isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s the smart thing to do. In a global economy driven by technology, we can’t afford to leave half of our population behind. By leveling the playing field, we open doors to economic opportunities, fostering growth, and equity.  Since 2014, we’ve been celebrating this day to shine a light on the need for more girls and women in the sector.  For me, as a woman navigating the digital landscape, this day resonates deeply.     Vibrant infographic displaying gender distribution in ICT education, highlighting the contrast between male and female enrollment percentages.

The power of a Girls in ICT Day

Diversity, empowerment, and gender equality make the ICT world better for everyone. It’s about welcoming all voices and talents to the table and building a future where everyone has a shot at success, let’s discuss a little about each one: Diversity brings different people together, and that’s a good thing. In ICT, having a mix of backgrounds, cultures, and experiences sparks creativity and innovation. Imagine solving problems with fresh ideas from all angles!  When we empower girls and women in ICT, we break down barriers and open doors to awesome careers. It’s about providing support, training, and a fair shot at success. By tackling gender disparity, we make the industry stronger and more inclusive for everyone. It’s about recognizing the value of women and giving them equal chances to shine.

Are things looking up for us girls?

According to ITU, ICT companies recognize the value of diversity not just as a matter of principle but also as a smart business move. More companies and organizations, including mine, are waking up to the benefits of gender balance. Take the International Telecommunication Union (ITU), for example. As the leading UN agency for telecommunications and ICTs, they’re leading the charge for gender balance in our sector through initiatives like the EQUALS Global Partnership for Gender Equality in the Digital Age. It’s inspiring to see efforts like this pushing for change. Supporting the education of women and girls in ICT isn’t just the right thing to do; it’s also in line with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 5, which aims to achieve gender equality and empower all women and girls. By investing in ICT education for women, we’re not only lifting them out of poverty but also opening doors to fulfilling careers.  As I reflect on the importance of gender diversity, empowerment, and addressing disparities in the ICT sector, I’m reminded of the profound impact that each of us can have. By championing diversity in our workplaces, supporting initiatives that empower women and girls in technology, and advocating for policies that promote equality, we’re not just shaping the future of our industry—we’re shaping a more inclusive and equitable world for generations to come. In 2024, we are celebrating Girls in ICT Day on the 25th. Don’t forget to stay updated by following us for the latest articles in this series.
